Why I Make Clip-On Earrings

Most people assume I make clip-on earrings because they're unusual. The truth is much more personal.

My granny has worn clip-on earrings for as long as I can remember. Years ago, she tore her earlobes after sleeping in pierced earrings, so clip-ons became her everyday jewelry. After she retired and moved to Tennessee around 2017–2018, we'd still shop for them whenever we could.

Eventually, I discovered large lots of vintage clip-on earrings on eBay. What started as shopping for my granny turned into an appreciation for the incredible variety of vintage clip-ons. There were bold colors, sparkling rhinestones, sculptural metalwork, unusual textures, and styles that you rarely see made today.

I also started borrowing my granny's earrings to match my outfits.

Even though my ears are pierced, one of my own earlobes is torn halfway. Instead of having it repaired, I found myself reaching for clip-ons more and more. They're comfortable, easy to wear, and I like the way they frame my face—especially since I wear glasses. Hoops never looked quite right on me, but clip-ons always seemed to fit my style.

I even learned how to adjust the tension so they would be more comfortable. Unfortunately, my first attempt ended in disaster. I broke one of my favorite unsigned vintage rhinestone clip-on earrings. I later found another pair online listed for nearly $300. I was heartbroken, but I kept my original pair and reinforced the backs with sturdier hardware. They're no longer part of my regular rotation, but I still treasure them.

After months of collecting, researching, cleaning, photographing, describing, and listing vintage clip-on earrings, I realized something.

I wasn't just selling them.

I genuinely loved wearing them.

That love inspired me to start creating my own collection of one-of-a-kind clip-on earrings through Styled by Shawnee while continuing to curate vintage pieces through Daunais Vintage.

Today, clip-on earrings aren't an afterthought in my wardrobe. If I leave the house without earrings, I feel like I've forgotten something important.

To me, clip-on earrings aren't a compromise.

They're wearable art.
